“I need a plan”

In my experience working with clients many express a desire to leave a session with a clear action plan, whether it’s to start a business, plan a dream trip, or organise their week ahead. While this is a valid and achievable goal I’ve found that exploring their thoughts about the plan often reveals deeper insights, including limiting beliefs, core values, or underlying fears.

Achieving what we want is often less about the plan itself and more about the journey of self-discovery involved in creating it. If crafting an action plan were all we needed, most of us could do that on our own. But during the coaching process clients start to consider how to reach their goals, deeper thoughts and emotions tend to surface.

I recently worked with a client who wanted to map out their week, balancing numerous appointments and obligations. As we began exploring their schedule, they became overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks in their life. This emotional response provided an opportunity to pause and reflect. Together, we examined the reaction: When does this feeling arise? Where is it felt in the body? How do they typically respond? Through this exploration, it became clear that their appointments weren’t just tasks they were tied to their values and self-confidence. These were the true obstacles to achieving their goals.

By the end of the session, we developed a plan, but the most significant progress came from the self-awareness gained along the way. Over time, this client has experienced real change. They now recognize their own blockers as they arise and use the strategies we discussed to address and overcome them.

I view my role as a coach as a privilege. Clients share profound thoughts with me, trusting me to help them explore their inner world. My approach isn’t about telling them what to do; it’s about asking thoughtful questions that guide them to uncover their own answers.
